Extended Reality (XR) Initiative

Selected work from my part-time at the XR Initiative @University of Michigan.

The XR Initiative leverages emerging XR technologies to strengthen the quality of Michigan education, cultivate an interdisciplinary scholarly community and enhance a nationwide network for academic innovation.

XR physics lab

Physics Lab is a VR experience for an introductory physics laboratory class where students experiment with Newtonian physics of motion and the physics of gravity.

Learning goals

1. Apply physics concepts (momentum, gravity and energy) to the experiment

2. Develop predictions informed by theory and compare them to the experimental outcome

3. Interpret the experiments using the concept of uncertainty

Storyboard

With the learning goals in mind, I worked off a script provided by our learning experience designer where students are scientists launching rockets on the surface of the Earth, Moon and Mars. They'll practice how much power and angle is needed to hit specified targets with uncertainties on and off. Their final goal is to land a rocket on the ISS (International Space Station).

Control board interface

A control board was needed to display information and for users to adjust settings, and I was given a skeletal shape of it to work off of. Since the rocket will be located to the right of the control board, most read-based items are placed to the left and control-based items are kept closer to the right so users can make minor adjustments and easily see it happen at the same time.

Project splash screen

Here’s to establishing the project brand look. Taking the environment similar to what the students would see in the experience and beautifying it (the Milky Way) to capture attention.
