The opportunity

How might we utilize virtual reality to help remove financial commitments and provide people with an engaging environment to practice and learn?

My focus in this project was to design the interactions, learn a new skill (360 illustration) and learn a new tool (VRdirect).

Design process

Storyboard

I started with a storyboard to flesh out how the story would flow

Physical prototype

By creating a physical prototype, I was able to view the entire space more directly without the need to remember every detail in every corner. It also helped me figure the necessary items versus the more decorative items needed for my scenes.

360 illustration

A practice drawing, or wireframe, with lots of trial and error behind the scenes

Testings

In the “wireframe” stage I tested how close/far the scene looked in perspective. After the scene was put together I tested how close/far I wanted the UI elements to be.

Final product

Welcome scene

A welcome character to guide the users through the first steps. They also serve as the information center where the users would go with questions.

Instrument choices

This is where the users get to choose the instruments they’d want to learn or practice. The difference is, there will be an instructor in learn mode where they can start/continue progress, while in practice mode, it would just be the user.

Lesson scene

With a short introduction, the user will be prompted with the learning material.

Learn at your own pace

When the user is comfortable with the material provided, they can move on to the next step. The instructor would be an artificial intelligence that will be able to answer questions and provide feedback.

Reflection

360 illustrations, or perspective drawing, is difficult and will benefit from more practice. I wish I had thought more deeply about how this would actually work if someone was wearing a headset. I used a phone the entire time as if this was a Google cardboard project. Overall, this project exceeded my expectations for what I wanted to learn and I’m happy with the outcome.
